Project No.3
Flinders St Residence
Mount Hawthorn, Western Australia

A Unique Architectural Sanctuary with Bespoke Design and Sky-High Views

Nestled on a steeply sloping block in Mt Hawthorn, this architect's own home showcases a remarkable blend of innovation and craftsmanship. Baileys Living, collaborating with Chindarsi Architects and lead designer Libby Guj, overcame numerous challenges to create a bespoke suburban sanctuary. The design features a striking 3D-glazed face-brickwork façades with a non-repeating pattern, a faceted concrete soffit, and flared column cantilever support. A curved, gold, and mosaic-lined bathroom pod, along with timber-lined interiors, custom golden aluminium façade and screens, adds to the home's distinctive character. Despite the challenges posed by building during bushfires and COVID lockdowns, this house has become a unique retreat.

The property retains the memory of an original carport at the front and boasts an eclectic but curated garden, with plants relocated from the architect’s previous home in Guildford. New plantings are strategically placed to ensure privacy from neighbours. The house seemingly floats above the landscape, offering breathtaking views of the Darling escarpment to the east. Expansive glazing captures northern light, warming the space in winter, while an internal double-sided fireplace delineates living areas without division. The two-story design includes a self-contained lower apartment for guests or a future live-in carer, supporting aging in place. A suspended pool in the courtyard overlooks the garden, doubling as a stunning water feature from inside the home.
